Academics and Curriculum

Academics and Curriculum

All of our academics are aligned to the NJ Student Learning Standards. Instruction is student centered and differentiated to meet students' academic levels, IEP, and personal learning needs.  Starboard Technology is used to enhance instruction in all subjects.  This year, the Therapeutic School and Preschool implemented a 1:1 initiative.  Students in our pre-K -2 program have iPads; students in grade 3-5 have Chromebooks. In addition to core academic subjects students participate in adaptive physical education, art therapy, social skills group therapy, music, and a life skills program.

The New Jersey Student Learning Assessments and DLM are administered in accordance with the DOE. More information can be found at the bottom of this page.

The Unique Curriculum is used throughout the school.  The award-winning Unique Learning System is a one‑of‑a‑kind program designed specifically to give students with complex learning needs meaningful access to the general education curriculum. From one convenient, cloud-based platform, educators deliver differentiated, standards-aligned content enhanced by powerful assessments, data tools and evidence-based instructional support. Students from pre‑K through transition have the advantage of consistent high-quality instruction, a motivating interactive learning environment, engaging symbol support and a path to independence.

All of our curriculums are digital.

English Language Arts

For our language arts curriculum we use the Journeys program. This is a comprehensive program that is leveled to tailor to each students' individual learning needs. It includes leveled textbooks, stories (presented in multiple genres), a Reader's Notebook which reinforces phonics, vocabulary, and grammatical skills. The booklet Weekly Tests for Key Skills  assesses vocabulary, reading comprehension, and phonemic awareness. The program also includes a Write in Reader which provides frequent checks for reading comprehension.

Mathematics

Math in Focus and Progress in Mathematics both use a concrete-pictorial-abstract progression along with engaging visuals such as pictures, models, and diagrams. Manipulatives and technology are incorporated to reinforce skills learned.

Math Exercises

Social Studies

For social studies we use a variety of programs including the Pearson My World Social Studies which is aligned with our social studies curriculum and the NJ student learning standards. Geography skills are reviewed on a consistent basis and intertwined in the program. Supplemental materials are used to meet each student's learning needs.

Science

Science and the S.T.E.M. field are an integral part of our curriculum. The Science Fusion program is comprehensive and includes e-Learning & virtual Labs, Scientific Inquiry Flip-charts, and science kits for experiments. More information about Science Fusion can be found here:
